Christmas with the Herdmans

Posted on

For the last week or so, our family has been enjoying evening readings from the book:  The Best Christmas Pageant Ever – by Barbara Robinson.  (See image of book below – and note that “Worst” Christmas Pageant is crossed out and replaced with “Best”)
Book cover
It’s a great book for kids and adults.  Although fictional, the story is quite believable.  You’ll especially love it if you grew up in a small(er) church setting in the South.   The cultural faux pas and the many innocent-but-out-of-turn observations made by characters in the book are truly hilarious.

Not to give the whole story away, here is the synopsis posted on Amazon:

The Herdmans are the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie, steal, smoke cigars, swear, and hit little kids. So no one is prepared when this outlaw family invades church one Sunday and decides to take over the annual Christmas pageant.

None of the Herdmans has ever heard the Christmas story before. Their interpretation of the tale — the Wise Men are a bunch of dirty spies and Herod needs a good beating — has a lot of people up in arms. But it will make this year’s pageant the most unusual anyone has seen and, just possibly, the best one ever.

At first I just laughed and rolled my eyes when I read how truly awful and delinquent the Herdman kids were described in the book, but after a little reflection, I see profound Christmas truths to be extracted from this humorous tale.  Here are a couple I’m trying to take to heart already:

1)   Jesus arrived in a very imperfect and messy setting.  He came not to show people how to make their lives perfect.  He purposefully entered in to the lives of imperfect, messy people to love them in a perfect way – and to give them (us, me) a perfect gift.  Ah, how easily I glaze over this point.  In doing so I minimize my need for Jesus and actually miss the point of Christmas. But the Herdman kids in the book – the “worst kids in the world” – got it.  It is THE point I need to cling to.

2)   Sometimes the people I fear who will mess up or mess with my enjoyment of Christmas are the folks I most need to invite in.  If I were in charge of the Christmas Pageant, I would have a very hard time inviting or even allowing the Herdmans to participate.  But doesn’t the love of Jesus prove again and again that the wretched and despised become His treasure?  Might I miss out on great joy by not allowing people who bring messes into my life to hear, touch and taste the real gift of Christmas through me?

These are just a few thoughts.  If you get a chance to read the book, all of the Hand fam highly recommends it.

We send our sincere love and gratitude to you this week.  Merry Christmas!!

A few months ago our team re-launched a public website used to raise awareness for our specific ministry work.  Global Technology is our team name within Cru.  Our focus on using technology for the Great Commission is highlighted on the site.

It’s such a huge blessing to have a phenomenal team to serve with.  Please take a look at the faces of each of our teammates, thank God with us for them and pray for them!

You can check out the site here:   technology.ccci.org   It’s very mobile friendly – you can view on your mobile phone.

Ready to have some fun while learning about our teammates and our work?   Ready.  Set.  Go!   Take 3 minutes to look at the site and then take 1 minute to answer this quiz about our team below.   All answers can easily be found on the website.

Thank you so much for your prayers.  If the Lord leads you to give a special one time gift to round out the year, we would be very grateful. Give here.

Programming and Gospel Power with a Brit!

This week our teammate Jon from England is staying with us again while he collaborates on some programming projects with our software development team.   Frequently our team “meets” with Jon via video conferencing.  So it’s always a pleasure to have him here in person.

How does technical, programming work – specifically creating digital tools for missionaries – integrate into the spiritual gospel work of the “power of God to save everyone who believes?”   Want to hear how Jon answered this question?   Listen here or click the video below.

Now What Do We Do?

The woman’s voice on the phone sounded cautious but sincere:

“I am calling because seven of my friends and I watched your movie about Jesus.  We received the DVD some time ago as a gift but recently watched it together.  At the end of the movie, it showed us a prayer to ask Jesus to come into our hearts.  We all prayed.  We have come to know the Lord.  …Now what do we do?”

From the MidEast - a few years backOur Cru staff member friend in the North African country who received this call could hardly believe his ears.   After a few more questions, they agreed to meet together so the eight women could begin to study the Bible and learn what it means to follow Jesus in a place where almost no one knows Him.   In their culture, even the idea of women going to meet strangers (especially strangers who are Christians) could mean big trouble.   Amazingly, the husbands of all of the women decided to come along too.   Now they have all met together for follow up several times – and one of the husbands has begun to follow Christ.   Praise the Lord!

As exciting as this story is, it’s not a completely isolated happening.  The Lord is repeatedly breaking through to reach people in the Middle East and surrounding regions.   In the news currently we tend to hear about so much evil and darkness covering this area.  But obviously the Light is not overcome by darkness and there is so much happening to reveal Jesus that we do not see.   It encourages me to keep praying and lifting up the people in these countries.

One other story very recently told to us by one of our field teams in this area described a well spoken man from an extremist background.   This man repeatedly saw Jesus in a dream and felt compelled to “bow to Him.”   Later this man told his story on a national TV Talk Show.    Literally there are dozens of other similar reports we have received from our staff friends in the region that we can not share here.

Thanks for all your prayers.   Any time you pray or support our work, you are a part of these amazing stories.

Oh, and if you want to see the movie that the women watched, you can find it here.
