Fall Photo Recap

Posted on

Whenever we send out updates and prayer letters that include pictures, we always get the most comments on the photos of our kids.   So we dedicate this update purely to catching you up with what the Hand clan kids – Avery, Addison and Toby – have been up to.

Some of these photos go back a few months (they’re a summer recap, not fall), while others were just taken this past weekend.

Enjoy!

Starting with God

Posted on

Have you ever attempted to start your car or lawn mower only to discover the gas tank was completely empty?  Frustrating!  Not much happens without fuel for the engine:  No combustion.  No power.  Not a chance of forward motion.

In a similar manner, attempting to start your relationship with God without the Bible – the Living Word of God – is pretty much a guarantee of not moving forward with Him.  We know that His written Word is living and active.  It’s not a magic formula but reading, studying and following His Word are essential for starting and growing as a Christian.

One of the best but somewhat lesser-known digital resources Cru has developed is Starting With God.  It is a simple way to take first steps to understand the most important things God says and get to know Him better.

At Starting with God you can…

    • Learn what it means to know God personally
    • Get the “Spiritual Starter Kit” to help move forward in a daily walk with God
    • Ask questions about the Bible
    • Read articles about common struggles in following Jesus
    • Sign up to receive short Bible study lessons by email

Starting with God is also available in languages other than English.  You could send the link or text it to a neighbor who might not speak English as his/her first language.

What other ways have you discovered to help new believers or “old” believers move forward in walking with God?

Leaving Mt. Fully Funded

Posted on

Next week we will begin re-assuming full responsibilities with our team with Cru at the office.  Our deadline for touching the summit of Mt. Fully Funded has arrived as of Oct 1.   So we’ll be leaving our mountain-climbing, full time fundraising mode …for now.

We’re incredibly close to reaching our total “Fully Funded” support goal.  In mountaineering terms, the summit is only about 150 vertical meters away.   The Lord has done incredible things to bring us up to such a high elevation on the mountain.   We feel amazed and so grateful!!  Incredibly grateful to God and for you our cherished friends and ministry partners.   The view is awesome up here!

All along this journey up the face of Mt. FF, we have realized that the Lord wants us to learn heart lessons as much as He wants to provide the dollars we need.  The heart lessons have been treasured milestones and in some ways – especially considering the limitless wealth and ability of the Lord to provide – the dollar-raising has been trivial.

What’s been the most significant heart lesson we’ve learned (or struggled to learn) along the way?

Honestly, it’s simply been a struggle to be OK with God when things don’t work out the way we plan: To be fully content when His timing and His answers are not precisely what we had in mind.

We have prayed for our timing and our desired route up to the summit of Mt. Fully Funded.  Our faith has been in Jehovah Jirah (our Provider) and not our own strength.  We’ve taken what have seemed to be the right steps.  It has been flat out hard work.  So in human terms, it seems like we should have arrived at the summit weeks ago. Although the Lord has greatly provided, His timing has been different than ours.  We wanted to meet the total dollar goal by the deadline, but we’re still 150 meters short.

Climber man very close to the summit flag

With the Lord, A plus B does not always equal C.   His ways are higher than our ways.   Translation: this means His ways are BETTER than our ways even when they don’t fully make sense to us.

In 1953, two men (Evans and Bourdillon) made a serious and calculated attempt to summit Mt. Everest.  Due to oxygen problems, they missed it by merely 330ft and turned back.  Two days later, their teammates Hillary and Norgay did reach the peak for the first time in history.  In a different type of “climbing,” the Wright brothers had finished building their flying machine and had all the knowledge necessary to make a successful flight weeks before Dec 17, 1903 (date of 1st success).   They were delayed several times by broken propeller shafts and weather.  The lessons from history seem to show that man so often thinks he is ready before God is ready.   We make our plans but the Lord determines our steps (Prov 16:9).

What will we do if we’re not fully funded?

Thankfully, at least a couple people we’ve recently invited to join us as partners in ministry may make a financial commitment within the next week.  So the Lord may yet bring us up the final 150m to the peak of Fully Funded.  But regardless, we are now “funded enough” to minister unhindered for many months.

Again, please know we are so grateful for you!!

In terms of prayer requests, please continue to pray for the remaining few commitments we need.   But also spend time praising and thanking the Lord, by faith, for meeting all our needs.   Here’s a short prayer we wrote from our hearts to thank Him:

“We have been asking, seeking and knocking for a year. The Lord has answered. He is answering. He is so faithful.

Rejoice in what He has done.
Sing to Him: ‘God is good. He alone hears and cares.’
‘God is great. He has answered so many prayers.’
‘So many I can not recount. He has given freely for the glory of His name no doubt.’

Lord, You said to keep asking, knocking in shameless persistence.
Today hear my heart and let there be no resistance to my praise.

No matter the dollar amount of the support, You have given freely and Your Holy Spirit has poured, poured, poured out love and a surrounding of Jesus. Thank You!!”

Our Ministry in an Action Verb!

Posted on

One action verb most clearly describes all our work with Cru.   What is it?    Drum roll please….

Invite

Without splitting hairs over a strict definition of the word, to invite is to take action and reach out to people – offering and encouraging them in a compelling way to participate in something extremely good.

Our day to day activities with Cru are varied.  You may hear about us hosting a conference, maintaining complex technical systems, training missionaries in digital methods for ministry, blessing people through prayer, equipping volunteers to reach people for Christ or developing new tools for volunteers.  Yet the core of our mission everyday is to be about the business of inviting.

Caring community passionate about connecting people to Jesus

We can only invite people to Jesus.  We can not change people’s hearts.  That happens after the invitation is accepted.

But the invitation to Jesus is rich and deep, not shallow.  And the “invitation list” includes more than non-believers outside the church.   Here are just a few possible results for anyone who might respond to the Grand Invitation:

Salvation and Life for Your Soul

Isaiah 55 –  Six times within three short verses, the Lord, speaking through Isaiah, passionately invites “everyone who thirsts” to come to Him.    “Come and drink.”    If perhaps we don’t feel thirsty, hungry or recognize our desperate need for God, the author makes it very clear:   Here is why we need Him:   “that your soul may live.”(vs 3)

Personal Invitation

It’s an invitation that brings life to sinful, dead people.   And even more so, it’s an invitation that leads thirsty people to three different types of drinks that truly satisfy.  Compare your favorite energy drink to this combo and there will be no comparison:
You’re invited!  Come and drink…

1) Water = Life  (water or “waters” are symbolic of life)
2) Wine = Joy  (symbolic drink of fullness of joy with a pure heart)
3) Milk = Strength  (symbolic drink of spiritual health and sustenance – providing growth for the believer)

“Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.”    Isaiah 55:1-3

Jesus proclaimed himself as the complete fulfillment of this Grand Invitation.   He is also the One doing the inviting:

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”   John 7:37-38

Renewal and Healing

Our soul thirsts for Living Water that can not only save us, but also heal us.  No one can make it through life without suffering a wounded heart.  Because our hearts are wounded and broken, we can’t fully respond to the the Grand Invitation without healing, renewal and a shedding of hindrances that strangle our growth.

Thank the Lord, we are invited to a place of healing and rest:

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28

Abundant Life and Dependence on Holy Spirit

The beauty of living with Jesus here on earth is that it is HIS life lived through us.  Living the Christian life in full obedience and limitless faith is impossible for me – but not so for the Holy Spirit.  Through the Holy Spirit, we can have full access to the joy and power we were originally designed for (before the Fall).

Jesus invited us to an abundant life (John 10:10) and promised that our dependence and hope in Him will never “put us to shame” (Romans 5:5).   For more on this, see our previous posts on this topic.

abundant and fruitful

Exciting Opportunities to Give of Ourselves

When we’re invited by the King of Kings, we realize we’re not worthy.  Only by grace do we have this honor.  In response, we joyfully look for ways to serve – to offer ourselves (Rom 12:1-2) to God.

We love because He first loved us.  As He uses us as His instruments, we get to fully demonstrate His amazing love by inviting others to step closer to Him.  This is what our ministry is all about.  However, we aren’t designed to do it alone.

inviting others

The Grand Invitation means that we serve Him together with you – our ministry partners.  We fully share the Grand Invitation with you – both the benefits of being invited and the exciting thrill of being a servant who helps the Master invite others.

So when we invite you to join us as a partner in ministry, it’s a rich invitation.  Ultimately it’s not an invitation from David & Shannon.  It’s from Him.  It is not an invitation to pray and give so David & Shannon can get by and get on with their life.  Our funding needs are real, but our invitation to you is not merely to get us to the summit of Mt. Fully Funded.   It’s an invitation to “come to Him,” to “buy from Him” and to be a part of His wonderful business of inviting.

Climber man so close to the top!

The Lord invites us all to truly live and not die separated from Him.

Jesus invites us to an abundant life of dependence on His Holy Spirit.

We’re all sincerely invited to have our hearts healed and to receive rest.

We invite you to pray and give financially as a means of offering yourself fully to Jesus and His work.

We invite you to invite others to Jesus, simply by taking the initiative to share the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit and leave the results to God (this is Cru’s definition of successful witnessing).

We invite you to seize opportunities to serve Him wherever you are – loving others, inviting others to experience His healing, and mobilizing your church to be about the business of inviting.
